New Housing, 1951
Photographer Clyde “Red” Hare moved to Pittsburgh in 1950 to work on the Pittsburgh Photographic Library, covering the city’s Renaissance I, with noted editor Roy Stryker. Hare had his own car and camera and Stryker offered to pay him $50 a week to photograph the city.
During that time, Hare made this photograph of new suburban housing east of Wilkinsburg, near Churchill. When the project ended, Hare remained in Pittsburgh, later teaching visual communications at Carnegie Mellon University. This particular image was printed in 1997 for the Carnegie Museum of Art exhibition, “Pittsburgh Revealed: Photographs since 1850.” At the conclusion of the show, Hare gifted this print to the museum, along with 15 others. His book, “Clyde Hare’s Pittsburgh,” published in 1994 by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, is a treasury of first-rate photojournalism of this region.
