Adult Overweight and Obesity Rates

Only 29.7 percent of adults living in the Pittsburgh region reported being a healthy weight in 2019, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. A healthy weight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 25.

However, that percentage is one of the highest among Pittsburgh TODAY’s benchmark regions.

Obesity is a different story. About 34.6 percent of adults in the Pittsburgh region were obese in 2019–above the benchmark average of 30.3. Obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30 or higher.
