Arrivals: Fall ’06

John R. Price is president and CEO of Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh. He is a Rhodes Scholar, who earned advanced degrees in development economics and diplomatic history from Queens College at Oxford University. He is also a graduate of Harvard Law School. During the first Nixon Administration, Price succeeded the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan as special assistant to the President for urban affairs.He spent 29 years at what is now JP Morgan Chase & Co. joining Manufacturers Hanover in 1972, which later merged into Chemical, Chase Manhattan and JP Morgan Chase.  He was senior vice president of Manufacturers Hanover Corp., the bank holding company, and responsible for the mortgage banking and consumer finance subsidiaries nationwide. He also led the team advising the U.S. government on the securitization of $5 billion of community development and rural, low-income housing loans and created a servicing company to handle the loans. Price and his wife, Svetlana, have two young children and live in Squirrel Hill.

John T. Delaney is dean of Pitt’s Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration. He is a nationally recognized expert in labor relations, unions and collective bargaining.  Previously, he was associate dean for MBA programs at the Eli Broad College of Business and Graduate School of Management at Michigan State. Early in his career, Delaney was on the faculty of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business before joining the University of Iowa where he became professor of management and organizations and, later, professor and chair of marketing at the Henry B. Tippie College of Business. Delaney has published widely. He received his B.S. in industrial relations, graduating magna cum laude from LeMoyne College.  His Ph.D. is in labor and industrial relations from the University of Illinois. He and his wife, Susan Schwochau, a practicing attorney, have a daughter.

Betsy Burleigh is director of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.  She is also the assistant director of choruses for The Cleveland Orchestra and the coordinator of Choral & Vocal Music at Cleveland State University. From 2002 through 2006, she was chorus master for Cleveland Opera.  Her work in Northeast Ohio also has included directorships of the Canton Symphony Chorus and the Akron Symphony Chorus. Her musical career began in Boston, where she was music director of The Master Singers.  Her academic posts have included serving as director of choral activities at Tufts University and at Clark University.  She has taught at M.I.T., the Longy School of Music and Southeastern Massachusetts University. She has a doctorate in choral conducting from Indiana University and a master’s from the New England Conservatory of Music.

Ray Shero is executive vice president and general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  He was assistant G.M. of the Nashville Predators for the previous eight seasons. He was responsible for scouting, contract negotiations and personnel matters. He also oversaw the top minor-league affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals. Shero also spent six seasons as assistant G.M. of the Ottawa Senators. The Predators went 49-25-8 with a club record 106 points in 2005-06 qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the second straight season. Shero captained hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the L.A. Kings in 1982. He was an agent for seven years before entering management. He is the son of the late Fred Shero, who coached the Philadelphia Flyers to Stanley Cup championships in 1973-74 and 1974-75.  Shero and his wife, Karen, have two sons.

Dr. Steven D. Shapiro is the chairman of Pitt’s Department of Medicine. He is a renowned pulmonary medicine specialist and leading investigator whose research has focused mainly on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung development and repair mechanisms in the lung.  Discoveries made by his lab have interested pharmaceutical companies working on a new class of drugs for COPD.  He joined Pitt after four years at Harvard Medical School as the Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine and as chief of the division of pulmonary and critical care in the department of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. There, he oversaw a four-fold increase of the division’s NIH funding. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology. His undergraduate and medical degrees are from Univ. of Chicago.

James H. Meltzer is vice president/general manager of CBS Radio in Pittsburgh and its three FM stations: STAR, K-Rock and Y-108.  He came to Pittsburgh after a nine-year stint in Cleveland where he was a regional V.P. of Clear Channel Radio, managing its six Greater Cleveland stations and overseeing 18 others. While there, he chaired the boards of Coats for Kids and the Greater Cleveland Film Commission. In 2004, he was named one of the top 50 most influential people in Northeast Ohio by Crain’s Cleveland Business. He has been in the broadcast business in Philadelphia, Buffalo, Rochester and Cincinnati. Meltzer is a member of the current class of Leadership Pittsburgh.  He and his wife, Pamela Ellis Meltzer, live in South Fayette.

Nadine Aubry heads the mechanical engineering department at CMU. Previously, she co-founded the W.M. Keck Laboratory for nanotechnology research and education at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She is vice chair of the U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mathematics and is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Society of Chemical Engineers. She received the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award. Born in France, she received her B.S. from the National Polytechnic Institute and her M.S. from the Scientific and Medical University, both in France.  Her Ph.D. is from Cornell.  She and her husband, John, have three children.

Pamela Klauer Triolo is the chief nursing officer for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Triolo has built her career in academic health centers, most recently serving as the chief nursing executive with the Texas Medical Center in Houston. At the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing, she was director of nursing leadership in health administration and systems and director of nursing strategy and innovation with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Triolo obtained a bachelor’s in nursing from the College of St. Teresa and a master’s in nursing from St. Louis University. Her Ph.D. is in health sciences education from the University of Iowa. Her husband, Peter, is an associate professor at Pitt’s School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. S. Ramalingam is the senior medical director for the UPMC Health Plan. Most recently, he worked in Rochester, N.Y., as medical director at Preferred Care, recognized as one of the nation’s best run health plans. He was appointed by the New York Governor’s office as the physician representative to develop a Pay for Performance plan for New York. A former faculty member at State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Studies, Ramalingam was associate residency director for the Department of Family Medicine.  He was also Director of Cross-Cultural Medicine and International Health. He received his medical training at Madras Medical College in India and residency at Hamot Medical Center in Erie. He has an MBA from the University of Rochester’s Simon School of Business. He and his wife, Lekshmi, have two daughters.

Beatrice Gibbons is associate professor and head of the Department of Elementary Education at Robert Morris University.  She came to Pittsburgh after serving as director of the School of Education and coordinator of the elementary education program at California State University, Bakersfield. She earned her doctorate in educational administration and foundations from the University of the Pacific. Her research interests include elementary science education, science education for English learners and effective instructional techniques. She previously was awarded a $900,000 Antelope Valley Math and Science Partnership Grant through the California Department of Education. Gibbons lives in Sewickley and has two children.
