Murder rates in cities are consistently higher than murder rates in regions. There are two groups of cities: high murder rate cities and low murder rate cities. The Pittsburgh region and the City of Pittsburgh both have comparatively low murder rates. The Pittsburgh MSA’s murder rate per 100,000 population in 2017 was 5.4, an increase of 5.9 percent from 2016’s murder rate. The City of Pittsburgh’s murder rate per 100,000 population in 2017 was 18.0, a decrease of 4.3 percent from 2016’s murder rate.
