Crime rates in the Pittsburgh MSA tend to be lower than those in most of our benchmark regions.
In 2018, the Pittsburgh MSA ranked as the safest metro area among the benchmark peers (who reported crime data) with a low overall crime rate of 1687.7 per 100,000 residents. Violent crime in the region was the third-lowest and property crime was the second-lowest among benchmark peers.
More specifically, Pittsburgh experienced the lowest rates of forcible rape and motor vehicle theft among all benchmark regions.
