Racial & Ethnic Diversity of Regions
Race and ethnicity patterns in the United States are significantly impacted by migration flows. Historically low migration rates into the Pittsburgh region have resulted in low overall diversity rates and an extremely small Hispanic community.
The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area is much less racially and ethnically diverse than its benchmark peers. According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 85.7 percent of the region’s residents are White, the largest of all the benchmark regions. Pittsburgh’s Hispanic population makes up only 1.7 percent of residents, the smallest percentage of all benchmark region. 8 percent of residents are Black or African American, 2.3 percent of residents are Asian and 2.5 percent of residents are multi-racial.
