Crime rates in the City of Pittsburgh tend to be lower than most of those in the core cities of our benchmark regions. In 2017, the City of Pittsburgh ranked as the third-​safest city among the benchmark peers with a low overall crime rate of 3770.8 per 100,000 population. Violent crime and property crime in the region was the third-​lowest among benchmark peers. More specifically, Pittsburgh experienced the lowest rate of forcible rape among all benchmark cities in 2017. Crime rates in cities tend to be higher than those of metropolitan areas.
